like clockwork, we fall apart by ~pen-and-ink-45301:iconpen-and-ink-45301:

you are waiting at the corner,
arms thrown wide like windows
a smile that I can see right through.
your heart stopped beating long ago.

I smile as we share a taxi,
but I am stealing the last of your secrets
and I will figure out how you tick.
you are tall and shining steel, fearless under sunlit scrutiny,
but I am weak and human and fragile
and prone to erratic ideals.

I am stealing the last of your secrets,
stripping your screws and exposing your flaws,
unwinding your gear box, pulling all your plugs, and
engraving my name upon each of your circuit boards
so you will never forget me.
so you will never be able to throw me away again.
instead, this time, I will be the one who leaves.

it has started to rain, and with inspiration born of desperation,
I refuse to share my umbrella.
the glint in your eyes cracks,
your step falters.
you crumple to the sidewalk,
and you rust.

inwardly, I am pleased with myself for being so clever.
I haven’t yet realized
how lonely I’ll be without you.

first attempt at anything in a while.
there's something in there. but this is far from finished.
work in progress. will be updated. or scrapped. haven't decided.

input please. I don't know where this came from.

EDIT: 06.21.09

new stanza. which was not what I intended - I meant to compress it. economize. shorten. eh. I don't know. does it work any better?

i like the symmetry and the symbolism in this poem x

I wish i was a Warhol silkscreen
Hanging on the wall
Or Little Joe, or maybe Lou
I'd love to be them all.
Then all New York City's broken hearts
And secrets would be mine
I'd put you on a movie reel
And that would be just fine.

thanks for taking the time to read it!

"You know, you and I are like crystal. Most people are just glass. The world sings a note to them and they can't feel it. But we hum. But you have to be careful. You have to know when to stop humming, because crystal will shatter."

It's good. It's powerful - well, for me anyway :P Symbolism is fantastic - love the middle stanza :) :boing:

thanks for reading.
I do like the middle stanza - it's a bit more direct than the others, and the imagery is clearer.
I'm glad to know you find it powerful. that's a nice thing to hear.

The fourth stanza is my favorite for sure;
You have a unique voice. The kind that carries you for awhile, before dropping you short by the end. I really enjoy reading your work~! :D

thanks for reading it. I'm glad you enjoy it.
hmmm. I like that description of voice. I like leaving things off abruptly, but neatly wrapped up.

if I'm allowed to play favorites with my own work, the first two stanzas are my favorites in this one.

The reason it's my favorite verse is do to the last part; "and you rust." I don't know why, though~

The first two verses are amazing as well. Favorite lines from them: "your heart stopped beating long ago." and "and I will figure out how you tick. you are tall and shining steel," :D
